This has been written into four regulations on additives, flavourings and enzymes, which have been approved by the European Parliament following talks with the EU Council of Ministers. The particle change rule follows growing concern about the environmental health problems associated with using nanotechnologies in food production.


A parliament communiqué stressed that under the new rules: “If the production process of an additive is changed, for example via a change in particle size through nanotechnology, a fresh authorisation process, including a safety evaluation, must be carried out.”


Under the new legislation, this could take 18 months, with the European Food Safety Authority having nine months to give an opinion, and the European Commission a further nine months to draft a regulation including the new (or changed) substance in an EU approved-list.
