Food prices in the EU climbed 7.1% year-on-year during April, the latest figures released by Eurostat reveal.
March and April were record months for food price increases in the EU and euro areas since Eurostat started monitoring data in 1996. In the euro area, food prices rose 6.2%.
“In March and April the pace of food inflation quickened,” a spokesperson for Eurostat told just-food this morning (3 June). “This data confirms what many European shoppers have noticed as their food and grocery bills have increased over the past two months.”
According to the European Commission’s statistics office, food inflation outpaced overall inflation during the month, with inflation sitting at 3.6%.
