The EU has approved further financial aid to support struggling farmers in Germany and Poland.

The European Commission approved a German government scheme that will earmark EUR100m (US$149.8m) for German farmers suffering from the recession in interest rate subsidies, subsidised loans and subsidised guarantees until December 2010.

Germany claims its farmers have lost EUR6bn in income in the past 12 months.

Meanwhile, the EU Council of Ministers has authorized the Polish government to spend EUR97m on buying agricultural land to create larger farm units, improving the industry’s profitability and efficiency.
