The EU-funded DiOGenes (Diet, Obesity and Genes) project is studying the dietary, genetic, physiological and psychological factors behind obesity, in the hope of helping to develop more sophisticated food control policies.

Researchers are devising a method of predicting an individual’s weight change in response to different dietary nutrients. They are also examining the role of the carbohydrate and high dietary protein content in enhancing the feeling of being full, to encourage healthier eating habits.

Participating countries are the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. The project should be completed by 2010.
