The European Union (EU) and Israel are to tighten cooperation over food safety and standards, under a draft EU-Israel general action plan promoting cooperation between Tel Aviv and Brussels.

It foresees talks aimed at pulling Israeli food legislation towards compliance with EU rules on food safety, plant and livestock hygiene. Also, there are to be discussions on setting up a joint-traceability system for vegetable and meat products, as well as moves to exchange more information about foodstuffs deemed dangerous to consumers.

The plan also provides for increased cooperation between EU and Israeli organic agriculture accreditation bodies and on introducing common international marketing standards for fruits and vegetables.
