France, Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece, and Cyprus opposed backing a proposal from non-member state Monaco to ask next March’s meeting of parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to ban the trade.


EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas – himself a Greek – said he “regretted the decision”, with his officials noting later that there remain “grave concerns about the state of stocks of the fish which are rapidly declining after decades of overfishing”.
