In a wide-ranging set of policy proposals to fight obesity in European children and teenagers, a committee report stressed: “Excessive consumption of trans-fatty acids (when over 2% of total energy intake) is linked to significantly higher cardiovascular risks.”
The committee also called for restrictions on unhealthy food commercials that specifically target children, adding that these rules should also regulate new media such as online games, pop-ups and text messaging.
The environment committee also appealed to member states charging standard rate VAT on fruit and vegetables to reduce or remove this taxation.
