The Netherlands halted transport of all poultry within its borders and banned the export of hatching eggs and birds to the rest of the EU at the weekend.


The Dutch agriculture ministry said yesterday [Sunday] that it was to start slaughtering chickens today in the centre of the country where the outbreak of the highly contagious disease was first detected.


 The affected Gelderland province contains around one-third of the Netherlands’ chicken population, reported Reuters.
