The European Union (EU) Agriculture Commissioner designate Mariann Fischer Boel has promised to make reforming the EU’s sugar market system her immediate top priority when assuming office in November.


In her answers to a European Parliament questionnaire, she stressed its importance as “one of the last sectors that needs reform”. The Dane also signalled support for the production of GM foodstuffs in Europe, but wanted rules preventing them contaminating non-GM foods.


“Measures must be taken to prevent their admixture at all stages”, she said. The key was setting effective thresholds for cross-contamination, especially regarding seeds, protecting conventional producers whilst ensuring the availability of “enough seed at competitive prices”.
