Meat and poultry livestock feed in the European Union will only be able to contain animal products that have been passed as fit for human consumption, if a new proposed regulation from the European Commission is approved.

Ministers have been asked to ban the use of meat from diseased animals, manure, digestive tract contents and slaughterhouse
water treatment waste. The regulation insists on the incineration of animal products contaminated with BSE or banned substances such as dioxins and PCB’s.

The move is attempt to ensure that all EU countries – including those which have been mostly BSE-free – adopt high health standards on animal feed.
