The scheme, announced today (3 July) by the EU Confederation of Food and Drink Industries (CIAA), will be formally presented tomorrow to the European Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

Texts of the labels are based on a uniform list of nutrients, nutrition information per serving and the introduction of guideline daily amounts (GDAs) based on the nutritional needs of an average adult, as derived from international, EU and government guidelines. Calorie information will be carried on the fronts of packs and energy, protein, carbohydrate, sugars, fat, saturated fat, fibre and sodium/salt content on the backs, said the CIAA.

The scheme was developed in line with EU legislation, the CIAA said, but repeated its request for the current directive on this subject to be simplified.
