In a move likely to further upset the US, the European Parliament voted that GM derivatives in products such as sugars and oils must be indicated on food packaging, and that the current rule that only food with 1% of GM material must be labelled is too lax. The new rules will require labelling for all products containing more than 0.5% of GM organisms.
The proposals must now be agreed by EU environment ministers before they achieve legal status, and are intended to solve the deadlock on GM labelling, which has led GM research to a virtual standstill in Europe.
However, the parliament has failed to agree on supplementary issues some Members of the European Parliament were demanded, whereby milk, meat and eggs form animals reared on GM feedstuffs would have required labeling.
