The Commission announced plans to introduce export refunds for pig meat carcasses, cuts and bellies.
EU exporters have been hit hard by the fall in the US dollar and the rise of the euro, given that US producers are key competitors.
High feed costs have also harmed the EU sector. As a result, private storage aid – announced only last month – has been suspended by the Commission.
“It appears insufficient to remedy the difficulties faced by European pig producers,” said a Brussels statement.
