The European Commission is urging the industry to exploit the new quotas. Notably, exporters from the poorest producer countries – labelled “least developed” by the United Nations – can now send unlimited amounts of sugar to the EU, duty free.

Meanwhile, some of the EU’s traditional sugar trading partners in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) of nations will benefit from larger quotas, but only if they have secured “economic partnership agreements” with the Commission.

ACP countries without such deals will have weaker access to EU sugar markets, noted a Brussels communiqué.
