The European Commission’s rapid alert system for contaminated food and feed (RASFF) has warned of further discoveries of foodstuffs tainted with the carcinogenic dye Sudan 1.

It has reported the presence of the banned substance in sticky barbecue marinades and spice mixes in the UK, where a scandal erupted last week over Sudan 1’s presence in Worcestershire sauce.


RASFF also noted four cases where Sudan 1 had been discovered in sauces in Germany, and of related (also banned) Sudan 4 dye in a shipment of Ghana palm oil, again to Germany.


The alert system also noted spin-off discoveries in Britain of Sudan 1 in foods containing tainted Worcestershire sauce.
