The amendment will get a first reading before a European Parliament committee in Brussels today [Friday]. Supermarkets have come under fire for selling food and non-food products at a loss to get more customers through the doors, and opponents to this practice claim that the promotions constitute unfair competition to local shops.
A spokeswoman for Asda, which sells more than 230 products below cost, is reported as saying: “The Office of Fair Trading and the Competitions Commission have investigated the practice of selling products below cost.
“Both bodies found the practice does not need to change and we follow their guidelines at all times.”
