Ten European Union member states, including the UK, can expect to receive Reasoned Opinions from the European Commission because they have failed to implement the commission’s updated Directive on the laboratory use of GMOs.

Aimed at tightening notification and administrative procedures, the Directive should have been fully implemented by June of last year.

The European Parliament has meanwhile adopted another revised Directive addressing the labelling and licensing of all GM products on the market.

Officials have stressed however that the current moratorium on approvals of GM products in the EU will continue until other such as traceability and liability have been settled satisfactorily.
