Italy and Spain will see the fastest growth in out-of-town retailing over the next four years, according to a study published today (13 February).

International investors and retailers will be “eager” to gain a presence in the sector in both countries, retail analysts Verdict Research said.


The two markets represent opportunities for growth as expansion in out-of-town retailing in northern Europe becomes harder to come by, the report, European OOT retailing 2008, said.


“Out-of-town growth will be fastest for Italy and Spain. Both markets are currently in a catch up phase and especially attractive to retailers and developers,” Verdict senior analyst Daniel Lucht.


Nevertheless, Verdict warned that EU legislation, an ageing population and the growth of online shopping could hamper the expansion of out-of-town retailing in Spain and Italy.
