FoodDrinkEurope, an industry body representing European food makers, has called on governments to reach an "ambitious agreement" on a new global framework on climate change and the COP21 in Paris next November.

FoodDrinkEurope stressed that the food and drink sector is "100% dependent on the climate" for the production of raw materials. "Climate change affects the sector, both in terms of production and price stability," FoodDrinkEurope stressed.

The federation highlighted the work that European food makers are currently undertaking to combat climate change, with 95% of FoodDrinkEurope members having already integrated climate change into their business strategies. However, the industry group insisted that a response that includes the "whole of society" globally is needed to address climate change issues.

"We are already seeing the consequences of climate change. Food production will come under increased pressure in the future. This is why Europe’s food and drink manufacturers are actively working to try to mitigate and adapt to climate change through actions such as: investing in low-carbon technologies, working with farmers and proactively engaging with consumers and partners along the supply chain," Pascal Gréverath, assistant VP of environmental sustainability at Nestle and chair of FoodDrinkEurope’s environmental sustainability committee, commented.
