In volume terms, sales grew 44% to over 102,990 tons. Germany saw a 62% rise in sales of Fairtrade bananas in 2014 to over 51,000 tons.

Cocoa sales were up more than six-fold on the level seen in 2013 after the introduction of a new Fairtrade sourcing programme. The scheme allows companies to bulk buy one ingredient on Fairtrade terms to use across product ranges. Before the programme was introduced, farmers could only sell to companies that sourced all ingredients for their products on Fairtrade terms. Among the companies to take advantage of the scheme in Germany is Mars Inc, which sources cocoa under the programme for its Twix bars on sale in the country.

The so-called "Fairtrade premium", which producer organisations receive on top of their sales revenues, grew by 30% to EUR12.3m, a spokesperson for TransFair said.
