Italian confectionery giant Ferrero is to invest around EUR80m (US$94.5m) in its Nutella Biscuits plant at Balvano in the Basilicata region of southern Italy.

It is suggested the investment will see production levels double from 16,000 tonnes to 32,000 tonnes per year when work to expand the plant is finished in October 2021.

The plans, confirmed to just-food by a Ferrero spokesperson, have already been approved by the Basilicata Regional Council.

The plant in Balvano is one of Ferrero’s four productions sites in Italy, along with sites in Alba, Pozzuolo Martesana and Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi.

This week, Ferrero announced it was buying Fox’s Biscuits in the UK from Britain’s 2 Sisters Food Group.

The acquisition, done through CTH, a holding company fully owned by the Nutella hazelnut spread and Ferrero Rocher chocolates brand owner’s executive chairman Giovanni Ferrero, cost the Italian company GBP246m (US$317.8m).
