Finnish sugar-free confectionery maker Fennobon has launched the first cholesterol-lowering chewing gum, using plant sterols and stanols already included in products like Benecol margarine spreads.

The chewing gum uses Reducol, made by Canadian company Forbes Medi-Tech, as the crucial ingredient alongside the sweetener Xylitol, which Fennobon uses in all its products, said a Fennobon spokesman.

The chewing gum, XyliDent Pro, has initially been launched in the Nordic countries and is scheduled to be rolled out in the rest of Europe in 2008. Another Finnish company, Kesko, launched a rye bread containing Reducol earlier this year.

Reducol contains plant sterols and stanols that can help consumers lower their cholesterol by up to 24% and has been used in milk, spreads and chocolate.
