US bakery giant Flowers Foods will open a former Hostess Brands plant it acquired in 2013 this summer.

The company said it was hiring for staff at the facility in Lenexa, Kansas. Flowers has not disclosed when exactly the factory will open but said it will start with one bread line operating, with around 100 jobs at the site.

Flowers has spent over US$10m on "an extensive modernisation project" at the site, a spokesperson said. The plant will produce Nature’s Own, Wonder and Home Pride breads for customers in Kansas, Missouri and eastern Oklahoma.

"Once opened, this bakery will allow us to continue direct-store delivery to some markets we currently serve, while adding other new markets in the area," the spokesperson explained.
