The bananas will be grown by family-owned fruit supplier Compagnie Fruitière on its plantations in the Cote d’Ivoire.

Harvesting will be done manually and Auchan said Compagnie Fruitière uses 25% less fertiliser. Cables will be used to transport products between plantations to minimise the use of tractors and the bananas will be packed in 30% lighter cardboard.

The bananas will be shipped from the Cote d’Ivoire on lower speeds to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Auchan said.

Compagnie Fruitière is a grower of fruit in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific region. The company markets its fruit in Europe and North Africa. Within the EU, it holds a 10% market share for pineapples and 7% for bananas.
