French vegetable processor Bonduelle has reported a rise in annual turnover despite sales falling during the fourth quarter.

The company said yesterday (4 August) that its turnover rose 10.7% to EUR1.7bn (US$2.43bn) in the year to the end of June.

Bonduelle said that its annual sales in Europe were up 10.5% to EUR1.3bn. Outside Europe, sales rose 11.2% to EUR428m.

The group’s canned vegetable sales climbed 15.1% to EUR913.8m. Its fresh processed vegetables increased 9.6% to EUR378.1m, while its frozen vegetable sales were up 3.2% to EUR434.1.

However, in the fourth quarter, Bonduelle’s turnover fell 2.8% to EUR419.8m. It attributed the fall to price cuts on private-label products, shortages of certain products following the poor harvest of summer 2010 and delayed deliveries in Eastern Europe.

For the fourth quarter, European sales fell 0.1% to EUR342.8m. Outside Europe, sales fell 10.1% to EUR.

Bonduelle’s canned vegetable sales fell 4.5% to EUR213.7m and its frozen vegetable sales dropped 1.5% to EUR106.2m. However, sales of fresh processed vegetables were up 2.5% to EUR100.6m.
