Carrefour has launched a price-guarantee campaign in France as it looks to revitalise its struggling domestic sales.

The chain said it wants to “take the offensive” on prices and will reimburse two
times the difference if customers find goods at a lower price at another shop within 15km of their Carrefour store.

It covers 500 items including food products like yoghurt, cheese and cereals and takes in brands from Kellogg, Kraft Foods and Nestle.

Noel Prioux, executive director of Carrefour France, said: “In times of crisis, we want to be on the side of our customers. We are committed to providing consumers with low prices all year on their everyday products.”

The campaign launches with the slogan “Lowest Prices, Greater Confidence” and will be supported by a three-week TV advertising campaign.

Carrefour endured a tempestuous 2011, culminating in last week’s news that annual profits would be “at the lower end” of the 15-20% expected fall it issued in October. Sales in France fell 2.4%.
