French retail giant Carrefour is planning to operate to up to 18 hypermarkets in Algeria by 2012 having opened its first supermarket in the North African country at the end of last year.       
 
The French chain’s development in Algeria is in partnership with Ardis, a subsidiary of privately owned property, insurance and hotel management group Arcofina.      
 
Carrefour’s 3,000 square metre supermarket, located in a working class district of Algiers, attracts close to 6,000 customers daily and more than 70% of the goods it sells are of local origin. 
 
The opening of Carrefour’s first hypermarket in Algeria is earmarked for early 2007. The outlet will be located in the east of Algiers, near the Hilton Hotel. The store will have 9,000 square metres of floor space and will form part of a 25,000 square metre shopping centre.
