France’s Carrefour is reportedly considering buying its franchisee Guyenne et Gascogne.

French daily Le Figaro cited an anonymous source who claimed Carrefour is holding a meeting of its board later today (7 December) to discuss a potential takeover.

A spokesman told just-food that Carrefour had “so far” no comment on the reports, adding: “We don’t comment on this type of speculation.”

Guyenne et Gascogne was equally as tight-lipped. However, a spokesperson added that a statement on the matter may be forthcoming in the near future.

Carrefour, the world’s second-largest retailer, has endured a difficult year, issuing a number of profit warnings and allegations of turmoil among management and shareholders.
