Carrefour has forecast its network of convenience stores in France could grow by a further 350 stores this year.

The retail giant, which is trying to revitalise a domestic business that has struggled in recent years, has just opened its 1,000th c-store in France.

By the end of 2013, it expects to have 1,350 outlets across four banners: Carrefour City, Contact, Express and Montagne.

Carrefour told just-food between 70 and 80 of the additional stores will be new outlets, with the remainder from franchisees switching to the Carrefour banners.

A spokesperson said changing consumer habits in France meant shoppers will increasingly using convenience stores.

“Consumers have two main expectations: time management [and] managing their daily spending,” the spokesperson said. “The consumer profile is also changing, [with an] ageing population and the rise of single-person households.”
