Casino is testing out a new supermarket concept in a former outlet, near Toulouse, which has been redeveloped in the style of a traditional covered market hall.
“Le Marché de Casino” is a foodstuffs-only supermarket where 90% of the articles sold are in the fresh produce category and regional growers supply one third of the range.
Fruit and vegetables, in as great a quantity as a hypermarket outlet, are presented in bulk on stalls with staff on hand to assist customers. Stocks are replenished twice daily.
Underlining the regional flavour, the supermarket hosts a stand by a local foie gras co-operative while wines from nearby Fronton and Gaillac are sold from the barrel.
Casino plans to test out “Le Marché” concept over a six-month period and if successful, the opening of other supermarkets of this kind will follow.
