French meat processor Covial has recalled 3.8m tonnes of fresh minced steaks and minced meat supplied to Carrefour and Casino outlets amid an e-coli scare.
The recall came after an inspection by Covial revealed contamination by the Escherichia Coli O157H7 bacteria.
Covial issued the recall after the expiry date for the products had passed. The recall was specifically aimed at consumers who had perhaps stored the products in deep-freezers.
Covial said that, to date, no complaints had been received from consumers related to the products. It added that the thorough cooking of minced steaks offset the health risks posed by e-coli contamination.
A Covail spokesman told just-food that an investigation into the cause of the contamination was continuing.
