A wage dispute which has seen Danone’s 14 French dairy plants hit by strike action over the past two days appeared to be moving towards a settlement this evening (10 March) following an improved offer from management.

However, when contacted by just-food, no-one at Danone nor at its staff unions were immediately available to comment.

The French food group is reported to have offered workers a 3.5% pay increase and a EUR150 (US$204.4) bonus, which is understood to have been accepted by unions.

Danone initially proposed a 1% hike from 1 March,  a further 1% on 1 September with a minimum rise on each date of EUR25 for workers on low salaries as well an EUR150 bonus.  Unions had called the offer “inadequate.”

Negotiations are continuing on the unions’ demands that workers be paid for the time they were on strike.

Danone indicated yesterday that the strike had been supported by a majority of staff while one union, Force Ouvrière, said that the percentage of workers backing the stoppage varied between 30% and 100% depending on the plant. It added that at 11 plants 60% of workers were on strike.
