French poultry processor Duc has opened the first of two buildings dedicated to the organic sector to Tannerre-en-Puisaye, in the Burgundy region.

Each building has an outdoor run of about 20,000 sq metres and is able to accommodate 4,800 chickens in compliance with the European standard for organic farming, which stipulates four sq ft per chicken.

The new buildings are part of the company’s plans to expand organic production in Burgundy to 15,000 chickens a week by 2015.

“Concerns about the environment, health and quality of foodstuffs play an increasing role in public opinion,” Duc said yesterday (25 October).

“By launching its organic sector, Duc meets the food and health concerns of consumers.”

Duc is making the investment in response to consumers’ increased awareness of organic food, highlighting research that shows 66% of French people are concerned about food safety products.
