French poultry processor Duc has sold a frozen processed food plant in Brittany to the production arm of retailer Intermarché.

The facility in Plumelin specialises in processed foods, notably nuggets, and Duc said it wanted to refocuses its strategy on fresh products.

However, the existing workforce is to be retained and Duc has made a commitment to be supplied by the plant with frozen products for at least the next two years. 

The production arm of Intermarché, the Pôle Industriel du Groupement des Mousquetaires (PIGM), said the acquisition would enable it to increase its turnover in the poultry sector and move into new markets.

It has set up a company to run the plant, Keranna Productions, “which will develop products specific to the snacking and fast food segments”, PIGM said. 

At the end of last month, the retailer announced it was looking to increase the turnover of PIGM by almost 40% over the next five years to EUR4bn, with non-Intermarché business accounting for 30% – compared to 15% currently.
