“The level of mobilisation we were counting on could well exceed our expectations,” said Jean-Michel Lemétayer, president of farmers federation, the FNSEA.
The FNSEA, which has called for a EUR400m (US$594.5m) emergency package, had predicted that around 40,000 farmers would be demonstrating across the country, accompanied by 1,000 cows, dray horses, pigs and sheep.
Earlier this week, French agriculture minister Bruno Lemaire pledged his support for a global plan in favour of France’s farming sector.
Speaking on French TV, he said preliminary estimates showed that farmers had lost between 10% and 20% of their income in 2008.
