French government official were last week quoted as saying that France is still not prepared to lift its illegal ban on British beef.

UK prime minister Tony Blair has been calling for the French to end the ban, which it introduced six years ago over fears of mad cow disease. The ban has led to strained relations with Britain since its introduction.

However, Reuters reports that a source close to French prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin revealed that the new centre-right government has asked food regulators to review the ban.

Nevertheless, the source was quoted as telling Reuters that: “Nothing has been decided or undertaken concerning a lifting of the embargo. There is absolutely no change of policy underway. We haven’t got any new scientific elements that would allow us to change our position from what it was last year.”
