French consumers are paying an extra 5.4% year-on-year for their food, according to the latest figures released by the national statistics agency INSEE this morning (12 September).

Against the 1998 base year, cereals were up 10.3 index points in August year-on-year, yoghurt and dairy desserts were up 8.2 index points, cheese was up 9.5 index points, while oils and fats surged by 12.2 index points.


After an expensive summer for fruit, prices retreated 16 index points during
August. Overall, fresh produce prices slumped by 11% during August, reflecting “morose” demand, INSEE said.


Poultry meat and egg prices, both dependent on cereals, were up 12.1 and 14.2 index points respectively.
