According to data from the national statistics agency INSEE, retail meat prices rose faster – climbing 2.9%. The figures come as the head of the Leclerc supermarket business, Michel-Edouard Leclerc, is predicting that the country’s food prices will rise by 4% in 2008.
The debate surrounding food inflation in France continues while French retailers and suppliers negotiate their pricing structures for the coming year. Negotiations must be complete by 1 March, following last year’s reforms to the loi Galland, which came into force on 3 January.
Under the reforms, a single written contract is required, but now commercial co-operation is more fully taken into account when calculating year-end discounts.
These reforms, and the retail planning loi Raffarin, have been targeted by the Attali commission, which wants to lift retail planning controls and revoke laws banning below-cost selling. The commission makes its final report on 23 January.
