According to figures released by INSEE, the national statistical office, today (13 December), prices of fresh products including dairy, eggs and fresh produce, have risen steeply during the past quarter.


The French consumer is now paying 2.6% more year-on-year for fresh products: supermarket meat prices have posted a 2.5% year-on-year increase, for instance.


Since July, the rate of year-on-year increase in multiple retailers’ food prices has risen steadily beyond last year’s levels, which recorded shallower increases.


Retail food prices across Europe can be expected to respond to rising input costs, especially for meat production. While cereal prices have eased slightly since the autumn, crops like soya have been hit by a 19% shortfall in the US crop, leading to price rises of up to more than a third across a range of animal feed compounds.
