French retailer Intermarché announced plans to increase its convenience network in major cities, especially Paris.

The company said yesterday (22 September) that it is aiming to increase its presence in urban centres by focusing on the deployment of Intermarché Express, its convenience format, in cities of over 50,000 inhabitants. The retailer said a dozen new sites are currently under investigation.

Philippe Manzoni, president of Intermarche’s food operations, said: “One of the strengths of Intermarché has always been its proximity. With Intermarché Express, we have all the cards to enter new opportunities located in the centres of large cities, including Paris and nearby suburbs.”

The convenience stores sector in the capital is dominated by rival Casino. It has 2000 Petit Casino stores throughout France, serving more than 700,000 customers every day, according to its website.

Intermarche, by comparison, has 22 Intermarché Express outlets, which represents 1.2% of the retailer’s store base.

Because of their location, the stores are will offer longer opening hours and services such as crates and quick home delivery. The company claims that price will be its key differentiation.
