The investment will see the addition of a new packaging line for milk in plastic bottles, the fifth at the plant.

Scheduled to enter service in June, the line will lead to the creation of 30 jobs, taking Lactalis’ workforce at Vitré to 470.

Annual milk production capacity at the plant will be increased to 430m packaged units.

“The need for a new line stems from strong demand for milk packaged in plastic bottles at the expense of Tetra Pak-type packaging,” a Lactalis spokesperson told just-food today (11 March).

“Logistically, Vitré is an excellent location for an increase in capacity, as it is trategically-located at the heart of an important milk collection zone.”

The extension of the Vitré plant is the second major investment project undertaken by Lactalis in Brittany in the past two years.

In March 2006, Lactalis announced it was investing EUR15m in raising the production capacity of its pizza cheese plant in Pontivy.
