French meat processing co-operative Arcadie Sud-Ouest is poised to acquire its smaller counterpart Poujol.

It is the latest move in an expansion strategy which saw Arcadie, a group of five beef, pork and lamb processing co-ops, acquire two companies last year.

A senior Arcadie official told just-food that a letter of intent has been submitted for the purchase of Pujol and a deal is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks. The acquisition will provide Arcadie wth an entry into the growing frozen minced beef market. 

Pujol has two abattoirs, one in south-west France, Arcadie’s home region, and one in the east of the country, which will allow the co-op to extend its geographical coverage.

Arcadie, which claims to be the French market leader for lamb processing, employs 900 staff and operates from over 20 sites, five of which are abattoirs. With an an annual turnover of EUR315m (US$426.3m), it supplies supermarket chains, high-street butchers and the catering sector.
