Nestlé, the world’s largest food maker, is set to launch NaturNes, a range of baby food products in France.

The Swiss food giant has set aside almost EUR25m (US$36.3m) to build a new production line at its plant in Epinal to produce the range, which will be piloted in France in the coming weeks.

Chantal Milot, general manager for child nutrition at Nestlé France, told just-food that the company had spent four years developing NaturNes.

The company’s R&D work had led to it patenting a process which “enables each ingredient to be softly steam-cooked separately, while using UHT sterilisation technology to guarantee the high levels of safety necessary for baby food”, Milot said.

Milot added: “For the first time, all the sensorial and nutritional qualities are preserved.”

The NaturNes range is tailored to babies from four to 15 months and will comprise 40 different meat, fish and fruit-based dishes. The range will be packaged in plastic bowls, replacing Nestle’s classic glass jars.

Milot declined to comment on the planned level of output of NaturNes at the Epinal plant but said the new production line had led to the creation 25 jobs.

French supermarket sales of baby food grew 3.5% last year to around EUR1bn.
