France’s food retailers have pledged to promote “greener” consumption over the next five years.


The Fédération des Entreprises du Commerce et de la Distribution (FECD) and France’s ecology minister Jean-Louis Borloo today (29 January) signed a charter setting out a mutual commitment to promote the sustainable development of the retail sector.


The charter, described as “a first in Europe”, includes an undertaking to inform consumers of the environmental impact of goods found in a typical shopping basket. This would, for example, inform consumers of the “carbon rating” of products.


Other objectives in the charter include the doubling over the next three years of the number of products bearing “eco-labels”.


The convention also makes a commitment to reducing packaging waste by at least 10%, attain a 75% recycling rate for glass, paper and cardboard and improve energy efficiency in stores.
