Two of frozen chip maker McCain Foods’ three French production plants are now on strike.

Staff at a factory in Harnes in the north of France went on strike yesterday evening (4 December), a union source told just-food today. However, it is not clear to what degree production is being affected at the Harnes plant which employs 500 staff. No-one was immediately available to comment at McCain.

They have joined workers at McCain’s plant in Matougues, which has been on strike since 27 November.

Unions are demanding a pay rises of up to 10%, which management has qualified as “unrealistic in the current economic climate”. McCain has offered its workers a rise in 2012 of almost 2.7%, bonuses included.

The latest round of negotiations at the Matougues plant on Friday failed to lead to an agreement.

During the weekend, an official said the plant had partially returned to production thanks to 50 non-striking workers. “We are adjusting production planning at other sites so that our customers do not suffer as a result of this situation,” he said.
