Systeme-U has today (27 January) claimed it is the fourth-largest food retailer in France after posting a 3.3% rise in revenue in 2009.
The company booked annual sales, excluding fuel, of EUR14.5bn (US$20.35bn) and said it had grown its share of the French grocery market by 0.4% to 9.1%.
“By combining the growth over the past three years, the group won a gain of 1%, confirming its consistency,” Systeme-U said.
By claiming fourth spot, Systeme-U is now ahead of Auchan in terms of sales and behind only E.Leclerc, Carrefour and Casino.
The retailer said it had attracted 390,000 new shoppers to its 1,178 stores throughout 2009.
Last week, E.Leclerc, France’s largest retailer, widened the gap between the company and its nearest rival in 2009 after reporting an almost 6% rise in turnover.
