When contacted by just-food today (10 March), an official at the think-tank, Crédoc (or the Research Centre for the Study and Monitoring of Living Standards) declined to comment on the contents of the study ahead of its publication in April.

Contents of the study were leaked to the French press. According to news agency Agence France Presse, the report presents three forecasts for retail employment in France.

The bleakest scenario outlines the loss of 40,000 jobs, based on stagnation in purchasing power globally, aggressive pricing and reform of the regulatory framework, all leading to more intense, price-driven competition.

The French government is set to relax regulations this spring for new retail locations offering the prospect of more outlets with the likely result being downward pressures on prices and fixed costs.
