The aim is get up to 2,000 firms in the sector (out of a total of 10,000 in France) to support the foundation. Each firm would pay a subscription fee representing 0.02% of their turnover, providing the foundation an operating budget of EUR3m (US$3.79m) and allowing the smaller firms in the sector to participate. So far 40 companies have contributed EUR700,000 in subscriptions.

“We want to play an active part in the fight against obesity but not at any price,” says ANIA president, Jean-René Buisson, “It’s out of the question that the industry be reduced to role of cash-till in the form of a tax.”

The “Food and Vitality Foundation” would have representatives from industry, government and the scientific community.
