Madrange refused to comment on the union statement when contacted by just-food. “We’re saying strictly nothing,” an official said.

French business media reported that Brittany cooperative Cecab and US group Smithfield Foods were possible buyers. Madrange named Gerard Michelau as president in December and Michelau is also a Cecab board member.

CGT official Edouard Cabirol said Micheleau’s silence spoke volumes. “The group will be sold in 2008. We’re also surprised that he’s only part-time (at Madrange) and he is also holding down a position at Cecab.”

Cabirot said the union had been told by the company that production of Geo meats at its site at Feytiat, near Limoges, would be transferred to Ablis, near Paris.
