French cheese maker Fromageries Bel has upped production of its soft cheese brand, La Vache Qui Rit (The Laughing Cow), by more than 20% due to soaring demand in the US.
The “Vache’s” growing popularity across the Atlantic is largely due to the inclusion of its “light” version in a range of meals recommended by the best-selling South Beach Diet.
Bel’s production plant at Lons-le-Saunier in eastern France is finding it hard to meet demand and the group is currently expanding its site in Kentucky.
Ironically, the growth in sales was triggered around the time of a call for a US boycott of French products due to France’s stance over the Iraq war.
